Reading an eyeglass prescription can feel like deciphering a foreign language. Here is a breakdown of what each term means.
OD and OS
OD stands for oculus dexter, meaning right eye. OS stands for oculus sinister, meaning left eye. OU means both eyes.
Sphere (SPH)
The sphere measurement indicates the strength of your lens prescription. A negative number means you are nearsighted, and a positive number means you are farsighted.
Cylinder (CYL) and Axis
These measurements relate to astigmatism. Cylinder indicates the amount of lens power needed, and axis describes the position of the astigmatism.
Pupillary Distance (PD)
This is the distance between the centers of your pupils, measured in millimeters. It ensures your lenses are positioned correctly in the frame.
Progressive vs Single Vision
Single vision lenses correct one distance range. Progressive lenses provide seamless correction for near, intermediate, and far distances without visible lines.
